The culture and heritage segment includes the museums and historical sites and institutions, the region’s libraries, and zoos and horticultural and botanical facilities. Member Spotlight: Jewish Museum Milwaukee

(posted: Jul 07, 2011)

Jewish Museum Milwaukee, which opened its doors in April 2008, tells the story of the Jewish people in southeastern Wisconsin and celebrates the continuum of Jewish heritage and culture, while teaching the importance of mutual tolerance and respect among people of all faiths and cultures. The Museum is located in the Helfaer Community Service Building at 1360 Prospect Avenue, designed by Edward Durrell Stone. Just inside is the Museum’s major artifact, a one-of-a-kind, 14-by-19-foot tapestry designed by Marc Chagall (shown here). The Museum’s creative efforts in the Greater Milwaukee area began with the collection of artifacts and creation of exhibits, videos and other interactive features that make up the content of the Museum.

Member Spotlight: Milwaukee County Zoo

(posted: Jun 28, 2011)

Since opening in 1892, the Milwaukee County Zoo is still wild after all these years! The Zoo is home to over 330 different species of animals and sits on 200 acres of park land. The Zoo hosts over 20 special events annually, which include Zoo a la Carte and Behind the Scenes Weekend. The Zoo also opened a new outdoor bonobo exhibit, which highlights our conservation efforts with this highly endangered species. Zoo a la Carte, also known as “feast with the beasts,” is an annual food and music event held in August. During a la Carte, the Zoo is open extended hours for visitors to come and enjoy food from over 25 local restaurants, as well as music playing at several stages throughout the Zoo

To Tax or Not to Tax?

I've been questioning whether the 501(c)(3) nonprofit model remains the best option for arts and culture groups that are having more difficulty than ever balancing the inherent organizational tension between mission and money.
