Present Music is Milwaukee’s internationally acclaimed new music ensemble. Celebrating 30 years of new music, Present Music commissions, performs, records, and tours the music of living composers. In the past quarter century, more than 55 new works, by composers from around the world, have come into existence because of Present Music. Founded by Kevin Stalheim, Present Music works closely with many of the world’s most exciting and significant composers while supporting the talents of emerging voices. It nurtures the next generation of composers through its education program, the Creation Project.

Every year hundreds of young people in Milwaukee gain the experience of creating their own musical works, which are then performed by nearly a thousand student musicians and heard by thousands of audience members made up of parents, teachers and student peers. The Creation Project provides composers-in-residence to Milwaukee Schools and community groups such as the Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra and results in original concerts of the students’ works.

The Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra (MSO) reaches out to diverse audiences through concert performances and nationally recognized education and outreach programs. All programs are guided by the MSO Family Shared Vision. This states that the symphony exists for three purposes: to comfort, educate, entertain and exhilarate the human soul through events of cultural significance, relevance and artistic challenge; to embrace, preserve and foster our musical heritage; and to enhance the vibrancy of our community.

Among the finest orchestras in the country, the MSO is the largest cultural organization in Wisconsin. Since its inception in 1959, the orchestra has received critical acclaim for artistic excellence.

The symphony’s 88 full-time professional musicians perform more than 130 concerts each season. A cornerstone organization in Milwaukee’s art community, the MSO provides enrichment and educational activities for audiences of all ages, economic status and background.

The MSO is recognized as a pioneer in the world of new music among American orchestras. For 41 years, the symphony’s nationally syndicated radio broadcasts have ranked among the nation’s largest collections and are heard on more than 240 stations throughout the United States each year. In 2005, the MSO became the first American orchestra to offer its live recordings for download directly through online music stores, including iTunes. In May 2010, the MSO was selected to participate in the second Spring for Music Festival at Carnegie Hall in New York on May 11, 2012. Spring for Music emphasizes creativity, variety and innovation in programming.

The MSO’s standard of excellence extends beyond the concert hall and dives into the community. It reaches out to more than 40,000 children and their families through its Arts in Community Education program, Youth and Teen concerts, Kinderkonzerts, Music for Me concerts, Behind the Notes pre-concert talks and Friday post-concert Talkbacks.

Festival City Symphony has been delighting audiences for more than 75 years with casual, family-friendly, classical concerts! Its two concert series, Symphony Sundays—Classical Music for All Ages and Pajama Jamborees, make classical music accessible to people of all ages and levels of musical experience, including newcomers and established symphony enthusiasts.

Symphony Sundays are informal events, a relaxed, yet elegant atmosphere for afternoons at the symphony. They are held at the historic Pabst Theater on select Sundays at 3 p.m. Concertgoers will be inspired by the musical masterpieces of renowned composers presented by the professional musicians of Festival City Symphony. Conductor Monte Perkins will offer descriptive program information from the podium. Children’s Program Notes is presented by Music Educator Jayne Perkins. This pre-concert group activity and orientation introduces children to the music before they hear it, increasing their understanding and enjoyment.

Pajama Jamborees are free, classical, pops concerts geared towards children and their families. They are held on select Wednesdays from 7-8 p.m. at the Bradley Pavilion of the Marcus Center for the Performing Arts. Each concert has narration and music selections that are lively, tell a story and/or demonstrate the colors of the orchestra. Dress is casual. Pajamas, teddy bears and blankets are welcome for the youngest audience members, especially for a spot on the floor in front of the orchestra. Conventional seating is also available.

Special Opportunity for Local Professional Actors to Explore CHEKHOV with Olympia Dukakis on July 25th, 27th, or 28th

Special Opportunity for Local Professional Actors to Explore CHEKHOV with Olympia Dukakis

TEN CHIMNEYS FOUNDATION

July 25th, 27th, or 28th

One-Day Opportunities Equity actors with a minimum of ten years of professional experience are invited to apply to be one-day participants in the national Lunt-Fontanne Fellowship Program.

This July, Olympia Dukakis and the 2011 Lunt-Fontanne Fellows (master actors nominated by theatres across America) will explore the works of Anton Chekhov. July 25-28, Olympia will lead in-depth explorations of all four of Chekhov’s major plays. Olympia and the Fellows will spend a day on each play, in the order in which they were written. The actors will read Acts I & II during the first 3-hour session of the day (scripts in hand, sitting, moving around), will break for lunch/dinner, and will then work on Acts III & IV. In Olympia’s words, it’s “a chance to move through the plays without directorial concept as a guide or obligation, feeling out what you make of these parts, what you make of yourselves in these parts.”

In order to accomplish her approach to the week, Olympia took on the task of “casting” Lunt-Fontanne Fellows in all four of the major plays. However, most of the four major works have more than ten substantive roles. Open roles will be filled through this application process, giving local actors the opportunity to spend a day exploring Chekhov with Olympia Dukakis, one of the most passionate and accomplished Chekhov experts in America.

APPLY by email by June 10th to Foundation President, Sean Malone, at smalone@tenchimneys.org with the following information: Name, address, phone, email, current headshot, current résumé. Please indicate if you are a member in good standing of Actors Equity Association. Please confirm that you have been a professional actor for 10+ years. Brief comments detailing your interest are welcome. Please note: Workshopping roles are for one day only. You may apply for a specific role(s) or indicate “any available.” Please indicate which day(s) you are fully available: Monday, Wednesday, and/or Thursday.

What is the Lunt-Fontanne Fellowship Program?

The Lunt-Fontanne Fellowship Program is a national program to serve American theatre. Every year, Fellows participate in an 8-day immersion master class and retreat with a world renowned and respected Master Teacher. The 2011 Lunt-Fontanne Fellows are: René Augesen (American Conservatory Theater); James Craven (Penumbra Theatre); Nike Doukas (South Coast Repertory); Rick Foucheux (Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company); Mark Harelik (South Coast Repertory); John Judd (Chicago Shakespeare Theater); Mary Martello (Arden Theatre Company); Austin Pendleton (Steppenwolf Theatre Company); James Pickering (Milwaukee Repertory Theater); Vilma Silva (Oregon Shakespeare Festival); Sally Nystuen Vahle (Dallas Theater Center).

NPR has an interesting story on All Things Considered this week: A Songwriter in Residence program used to taking complex concepts and condensing them into short, easy-to-understand stories

NPR has an interesting story on All Things Considered this week: One of the challenges among scientists is to describe the work they do in language the rest of us can understand. That’s the idea behind a new program at the University of Tennessee that uses music to bridge that communication gap.

The National Institute for Mathematical and Biological Synthesis, or NIMBioS, isn’t a place for intellectual lightweights. The whiteboards are tagged with the frenetic graffiti of advanced math, and the conversations are dense with the mysterious jargon of advanced science. So the last thing you’d expect to see there is an office door with a sign reading, “Songwriter in Residence.”

The Songwriter in Residence program is the brainchild of NIMBioS director Louis Gross. Gross noticed that the scientists and mathematicians with whom he works aren’t always that good at communicating their ideas in a concise, accessible way. Moreover, he says, most people don’t really have the time or patience to wade through complicated explanations of scientific theory. As a result, we don’t always have a good sense of what scientists are doing.

Songwriters are used to taking complex concepts like love and heartbreak and condensing them into short, easy-to-understand stories — it’s how people like Jay Clark make a living.

Read & listen to the whole story from NPR: http://www.npr.org/2011/05/17/136402623/scientists-and-musicians-compare-notes?sc=emaf

The Arts in Media category replaces Arts on Radio and Television and expands the parameters of projects previously funded through that category.

Here are the highlights of the new guidelines:

All project types that were previously eligible remain eligible. In addition, the expanded category now supports:

All available media platforms such as the Internet, interactive and mobile technologies, digital games, arts content delivered via satellite, as well as on radio and television.

Dramatic narrative or fictional works.

Media projects that can be considered works of art.

Grants are available to support the development, production, and national distribution of innovative media projects about the arts and media projects that can be considered works of art.

Projects may include high profile multi-part or single television and radio programs (documentaries and dramatic narratives); media created for theatrical release; performance programs; artistic segments for use within an existing series; multi-part webisodes; installations; and interactive games. Short films, five minutes and under, will be considered in packages of three or more.

Grants generally will range from $10,000 to $200,000, based on the platform and the complexity and scope of the project. The application deadline date is September 1, 2011.
